Avenida 5 (5th Avenue) is Playa del Carmen’s hotspot for shopping, dining and nightlife.
As I mentioned before in Part 1, we were lucky enough to have our cute hotel situated within walking distance to the beach, downtown, and Avenida 5. Although we lived close to the Avenida 5, we actually spent the least time there. We would only go at night after our day trips to enjoy a cool mojito or margarita. My friend D and I waited until the last minute to spend the day here and do all our souvenir shopping.
We dined here for one night and it was quite a splurge. After that, we decided to be adventurous and sample the local (and quite frankly, cheaper) cuisines. One night we went to this small barbeque place recommended by our hotel concierge. It was by far one of the best barbeques I ever had. It was located downtown, and we had fun walking around the city. Our very nice hotel concierge drew me a map of downtown, and even taught us how to read the street signs. (calles versus avenidas, etc.) I should have kept that map. We had so much fun during our stay.
Speaking of fun…
Mexico won’t be Mexico if not for the drinks! Nothing beats an authentic Mexican margarita.
