The USA has a lot of amazing national parks. 62 national parks the last time I checked. That number does not even include the entire National Park System which has a total of 421 units ranging from parks, monuments, and battlefields. The Carlsbad Caverns, however, is one of a kind.
There was a time in my life when I was really into caves. I was so into it that I went on a very rigorous wild cave expedition at the Organ Caves in West Virginia. Let’s just say that was the first and last time. The Carlsbad Caverns is a different story. It was the perfect destination to satisfy my cave fascination minus the rigorous and life-threatening part.
What to wear
It is important to pay attention to what you need to wear. The National Park System website recommends closed-toe shoes with good traction for safety. Some trails are wet from natural water drips and most areas have little lighting. Since you will be 750 feet below underground, the temperature is 56°F (13°C) year round and humid. A light jacket or long-sleeved shirt is recommended.
Inside Carlsbad Caverns
I was surprised by how visitor-friendly it was. From the moment you step inside the Visitor’s Center, you will be guided and informed on the do’s and dont’s, as well as a short history. And of course, how they maintained and preserved the beautiful rock formations are. I felt like I was walking through Batman’s underground wonderland. There’s also an underground restaurant and gift shop, so you can take as much time as you want.
The Carlsbad Caverns is a must-see national park. You get to see nature’s wonders 750 feet underground.
