The most meaningful journey I had was my own version of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ trip to Mexico in 2010. It was also my pre-birthday gift to myself and a much needed getaway trip. Ok, I admit, my first serious long-term relationship ended, and I wanted to run away from everything. So, I grabbed my best friend D (maybe begged too, not sure) and jetset to what would become my first soul-searching trip.
My obsession with the beach was renewed, and my love affair with Mexico began when I set foot on its white sand and pristine beaches. Yes, I went to touristy places like Tulum and Cancun, but what endeared me the most was the lowkey, sometimes off the beaten path experience. That’s how I would want my trips to be from now on…immersion in culture, blend in the crowd, offbeat secret destinations.
But before I discovered this breathtaking gem, I spent time roaming the streets (and beaches) of Playa del Carmen. We stayed at a small quaint hotel located two blocks away from the beach and a five minute walk to Avenida 5.
